Here’s a guy who, although (almost) certainly dead, still manages to maintain a malevolent glint in his eye. This photo was taken at the market in Kalamata, one of the best markets in Greece – acres of fresh produce, fish and meat. But it would be a brave customer, I feel, who’d take home this for dinner…
I think I’ll go for something that doesn’t have so many teeth…
Incidentally, in Greek mythology Nireus was king of my favourite island, Symi, at the time of the Trojan war. He was reputed to be a very handsome man, second only to Achilles himself in good looks – no surprise, I’m sure, to his Symiot descendents. But Nireus wasn’t a strong man, and was killed during the fighting, possibly by Aeneas, a son of Aphrodite. Mythology is everywhere, in Greece.
Author of the Mysteries of the Greek Detective, books with a touch of mythology set in almost-contemporary Greece, and featuring lots of fabulous Greek food.
